Baseball versus Cricket – Playing Well in the International Market

As our world continues to ‘shrink’ and we are exposed to differing cultural and societal influences from around the globe, companies that market to a wide variety of industry sectors and nations (such as Neocase) must be cognizant of both the differences and similarities of a wider variety of cultures and people.

Spring is in the air, which means summer is on the way; both baseball and cricket are gearing up for their seasons. Both sports evolved from British origin, with cricket being the dominant sport worldwide until the American Civil War, when baseball became the more popular in the US. Today, baseball is the more dominant sport in the US, Japan, Cuba and Latin America; while cricket is the more dominant in Anglophile countries such as England, Australia, India, New Zealand and South Africa. And while these countries certainly have their favorite sport of the two – one can usually find a game of the lesser popular sport as well.

Baseball and cricket both play an important part in the culture in which they’re played – and have become deeply ingrained in their societies – and a source of pride for their nations. While baseball is closely associated with the US and called “the national pastime” there, cricket has a strong influence in the culture of Great Britain and her current and former colonies. A great many expressions from the sports have entered the languages of the countries they’re played in – showing just how great the influence and pride is in these institutions.

These two sports are a microcosm of the global influence and goodwill that may be shared amongst people and nations – helping to establish and build relations and span divides. ‘Sportsman-like’ conduct serves us well in our dealings in competitive tournaments such as these games create, as well as in business dealings between corporate entities – whether they are around the corner – or around the world.
